CDL LICENSE CLASSES
Different CDL classes require different written exams at the DMV. Here's what you need for each class:
CDL Class A
For combination vehicles (tractor-trailers, truck and trailer combos, tanker vehicles, livestock carriers, flatbeds)
Required Exams:
CDL Class B
For single vehicles over 26,001 lbs (straight trucks, large buses, segmented buses, box trucks, dump trucks)
Required Exams:
CDL Class B — Passenger
For vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers (city buses, charter buses, shuttle buses)
Required Exams:
CDL Class B — School Bus
For school buses designed to transport students (requires additional background check)

DRUG TEST REQUIRED
All CDL applicants are required to pass a drug test as part of the licensing process. This is a federal requirement enforced by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and applies to all commercial motor vehicle drivers.
A DOT-approved drug screening must be completed before you can begin your CDL training program.
The test screens for substances including marijuana, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, and PCP.
Random drug testing will continue throughout your career as a commercial driver — staying clean is essential.
